Engineering

The engineering industry is thriving in Alberta due to the large investment in capital projects. The industry in Alberta boasts the highest per-capita ratio in Canada and one of the highest in North America.

There are over 52,000 engineers and geoscience professionals registered in the province and there are over 16,000 applied science and engineering technicians and technologists who have voluntarily registered with the Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (ASET).

A strong, dynamic sector

A major component of the engineering sector in Alberta is the consulting engineering and geoscience industry. The sector is aggressive, proactive and dynamic and has become strong as a result of an active Alberta economy. Firms have gained experience and perfected skills by developing Alberta's major infrastructures and resources.

The sector includes single, dual and multi-disciplined firms offering engineering and technical services, generally without procurement and construction. Firms in Alberta are experienced in the following specialized disciplines:

  • civil, municipal and structural engineering
  • geological and geo-technical engineering
  • mechanical, electrical and process engineering for hydrocarbon resource development and upgrading
  • petroleum and reservoir engineering
  • transportation and environmental engineering

A major strength is the engineering capability for oil and gas production facilities. They work in concert with our competitive petroleum equipment packagers. The sector also includes several large engineering contractors who provide engineering, procurement, and construction services (EPC), particularly to industrial process plant projects.
