Language training
In order to find work in your occupation in Alberta, you may need to take classes to improve your English language skills.
Many schools and agencies offer courses for adults in English as a Second Language (ESL). Classes may be offered full-time (five hours a day) or part-time.
You may have to pay for ESL courses, or you may qualify for federal government-funded language training through the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program or a provincially funded program like Employment and Training Programs and Services Work Foundations.
Language assessment services
In Alberta, language assessment centres in Edmonton and Calgary offer language assessments, information and referrals to ESL programs. These two major language assessment centres also have directories of available ESL courses in Edmonton and Calgary, as well as in a number of smaller centres.
To make an appointment in Edmonton and Calgary, or learn more about taking an ESL course, visit the Language Training page on the Alberta Employment and Immigration website.
For a list of language assessment services throughout Alberta, visit the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks website.
