Space related products and parts account for $200 million in revenue, of which 75% is exported to the United States and Europe. This niche has significant growth potential as the Canadian Space Agency sets its course for the future and looks for strategic partners across the country. Internationally, space exploration and use of earth orbiters is increasing. Canadian and U.S. expenditures related to the development of exploration systems are expected to almost double by 2012; similar growth is also expected by the European Union, Japan, and emerging powerhouses on earth observation such as Brazil.
To capitalize on these growing opportunities, the Aviation Alberta Space Industry Panel is being developed to support and enhance the space science and aerospace geomatics niche in Alberta.
The goals of the panel are:
- To enumerate and define the specific opportunities to Alberta industry
- To facilitate Alberta business’ exploitation of those opportunities through industry development activities, networking, and supply chain development
- To contribute to international bids on academic-led space projects
- To increase the number of Alberta companies in the space niche through investment attraction, cross-industry diversification, and market expansion activities
- To act as a networking hub for the flow of information between industry, academia, research centres, and governments
- To act as local planning committee for Canadian Space Society Summit 2011 in Calgary (Fall 2011)
